How this method works

PQ4R stands for Preview, Question, Read, Reflect, Recite, and Review. It is a structured reading method designed to turn passive textbook reading into an active process. It works because each stage forces you to engage with the material differently: previewing builds a mental scaffold, generating questions primes your brain to search for answers, and reciting and reviewing pull information out of memory rather than just pushing it in. That retrieval effort is what strengthens durable memory, which is why PQ4R outperforms simply rereading a chapter.

To apply it, skim headings and summaries first, then convert each heading into a question you want answered. Read one section at a time hunting for those answers, pause to reflect on how the ideas connect to what you already know, and then recite the key points aloud or in writing without looking. During the recite and review stages, the questions you generated become natural flashcard prompts.
